I'm fixing a hole aka decluttering

where the rain gets in and stops my mind from wandering
where it will go
I'm still recovering from my cold. I'm not feeling particularly coherent, but productive. Somehow the cold made me look around, and see a lot of mess and clutter. I've been meaning to do something about it for a while. Just didn't quite have the energy. Somehow not being to breathe meant cleaning.

It was also Chinese New Year, a time for cleaning. I only found this out later .

I started with papers. I know how to declutter papers. I know if I haven't looked at something in six months, and it's not financial, I just won't look at it so it needs to go. Lots of Economists and Oprahs went. Recycle, file, or find a home for it.

I decluttered enough that I finally figured out a home for the mail that I've looked at, and I want C to look at - a little office stacker ugly but servicable. C can put things in my stackie thing on the rare occasions he checks mail. Ahh it's made such a difference. The previous "home" the countertop meant chaos. We never knew if each other had looked at things and so things just stacked up in huge piles. Now the piles are not on the countertop but in their little home.

Then I did quite a bit of decluttering of our bedroom. It just had a lot of stuff that doesn't belong there -- old clothes computer parts old medical supplies for Little T. The top of my grandparrents' dresser was iust piled with random crap. We spent a lot of time clearing things out. Some things I just put in the passageway because they need to go elsewhere and there wasn't room in the kid's room or I ran out of energy.

I vaccummed everywhere.

And now our bedroom looks a lot nicer. It has noticeably changed the atmosphere there. We laugh more there touch more. It feels more like a sanctuary and less like chaos. We still have more work to do to actually make it look nice but it's definite progress.

We also tackled some issues with the kids' room. The floor was covered with clothes. The closet and changing table were filled with clothes that Little T has grown out of. It seemed like he didn't grow for so long we got out of the habit of putting away his old clothes. So now we have a box filed with boys 12 and 18 month clothes. At last my boy is a size 24m sometimes even 2T. Well on the smaller size of those clothes.

C then vacuumed the kids' room and shampooed the floor. It smells a lot better. He had to fix the shampooer, because our nanny had been using it as a vacuum cleaner.
There's still a lot to do. And I broke the vacuum cleaner. I wanted a new one anyway. I like cannister vacuums because I find the smaller head easier to push. I expect the back end to follow around the head like an obedient dog. You must lead the dog, but it should follow. Unfortunately the cord on this vacuum is narrow as C pointed out. And worn. The cannister follows around but the cord doesn't. It yanks out. Finally it yanked out and left one of the plug tangs still in the socket. Fortunately the vacuum was not at the time. I need a sturdier vacuum and one with a lighter cannister. I read on the gardenweb a place with fanatics about appliances that I should buy a Miele vacuum. I ponder this or a Roomba.

I had originally though about a Roomba. I'm not sure it would do the job since picking up is the big problem anyway. And then I'd still want to vacuum sometimes anyway. So I think I will just go for something that makes it as easy to vacuum as possible.

What a great feeling. I always find that when I declutter my house, my mind declutters as well. I feel lighter, too.

Your lj-cut looks right... I wonder why it's not actually cutting. Maybe your editor "helped" by turning angle brackets into lt; and rt; or something.

I definitely have a clutter problem but I've been trying to clear small amounts of space at a time, and it seems to be working.

Good luck.

Sorry fixed the lj-cut problem. I'm glad clearing small spaces works for you.
